Microsoft to Automatic Upgrade Windows 11 23H2: What You Need to Know

Last year, at the end of October, Microsoft announced that Windows 11 23H2 – also known by the marketing name Windows 11 2023 Update – is finished and is starting distribution. The installation was not mandatory in the first phase, as you had to first activate the Get the latest updates as soon as they are available option in Windows Update.

After then checking for updates, the option to go appeared, provided that Windows Update evaluated your computer as compatible and without known problems. Therefore, in the default configuration, version 23H2 was not automatically installed. That’s what’s changing.

On one of the Redmond documentation pages they published new information valid as of February 20. They confirm that they are starting the next phase of distribution of Windows 11 23H2, and this time it will be already migration performed automaticallyi.e. without having to apply for it out of personal interest.

Installation is a snap if you are upgrading from version 22H2

However, it still won’t be free distribution without obstacles. In the second phase, Microsoft is targeting Windows 11 computers that are nearing the end of their life cycle or have already reached the end of their useful life. Microsoft uses its favorite and vague wording, meaning of course the lifespan of the Elevens, not the hardware.

Which puts us in a strange situation, because no version of Windows 11 is retiring anytime soon. Support for version 21H2 ended in October, while support for Windows 11 22H2 will end this October. So that’s a fairly distant future.

So we are talking about relative distances, because the controlled distribution will not last a year, and well before October, the widespread distribution of version 23H2 will be launched. Of course, we can talk about the fact that the end of 22H2 support is approaching. As a result, Microsoft wants to tell us in an unnecessarily complicated way that the migration to version 23H2 now applies to practically all computers with Eleven.

Still, priority access will get you an early installation

At this stage, however, Windows Update may not offer you an update. As always, Microsoft uses machine learning to identify the devices on which it would occur known complications with program or driver compatibility. They will not release the update for them yet.

Even if no obstacle affects your machine, you can still wait for the update because the update is made available gradually. So now you just know that it may apply to you, but no one can tell you the exact date of the migration. If you want an early upgrade, activate the aforementioned priority access to new features. Compared to the 22H2 version, the 23H2 version offers a minimum of new features.
