Microsoft has announced that the company has stopped manufacturing its next-gen Xbox One game consoles. The company will only produce its current-generation Xbox Series S/X consoles now.
“To focus on production of the Xbox Series X/S, we have stopped production on all Xbox One consoles through the end of 2020,” Cindy Walker, senior director of Xbox console product marketing, told The Verge.
The move makes sense for Microsoft, which appears to be meeting the demands of the $299 Xbox Series S in the UK and US. The company also made a similar move ahead of the Xbox Series X launch in 2020, discontinuing the Xbox One X and Xbox One S, also halting production of the Xbox One S until the end of the year.
Meanwhile, things took a very different turn at Sony after the company confirmed it would continue to production of Sony PlayStation 4 consoles, as getting your hands on a PS5 remains very difficult.
As per reports, Sony initially planned to end PS4 production in 2021, but ongoing shortages have led to the company producing around a million more PS4 units in 2022.
However, a report from The Verge points out that getting a new PS4 now isn’t a walk in the park either. Many retailers don’t have PS4 units to sell, while Sony will only sell one unit per user for the original price of $299.99.
