Recently, Microsoft silently changed its update policy for Windows 10. That writes the specialized website WindowsTimes in a blog. From the launch of Windows 10 2004, the May 2020 update, corporate operating system users can postpone automatic installation of major updates for only 35 days. Previously, corporate customers could postpone Windows updates for up to a year. The new policy applies to Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise and Education.

In the Windows 10 documentation, the company explains the change. “ Last year, we changed the update policy for Windows 10 to only target devices with a feature update version nearing the end of the service. As a result, companies update many devices only once a year. To ensure that all devices can get the most out of this change and avoid confusion, we removed the deferment option from the “Advanced options” page for Windows Update settings from Windows 10, version 2004. “

Importance of updates

With the new change, Microsoft wants to encourage companies not to postpone their updates for too long. After all, this could eventually lead to safety problems. If you do not install the Windows feature updates in time, you will no longer receive support from Microsoft for the old version. This means that you will no longer receive security updates. However, those updates are very important: they fix vulnerabilities in the software and protect companies against cyber incidents. Therefore, Microsoft now wants Windows updates to be delayed for only 35 days.

Companies that still want to postpone the updates can still choose to do so. “If you still want to continue using the deferral option, you can do so through the local Group Policy,” Microsoft concludes in the documentation. The steps are as follows: Computer Configuration> Administrative Templates> Windows Components> Windows Update> Windows Update for Business> Select when to receive Preview builds and Feature updates or Select when to receive Quality updates.
