Microsoft may continue to build a data center in North Holland

Microsoft is allowed to continue with the construction of a new data center in Middenmeer in North Holland, reports the Financieel Dagblad. The company has received a tolerance decision from Noord-Holland. That means that Microsoft can start building at its own risk, pending a final permit. The company already has a large data center in Middenmeer.

There is a lot of discussion about the arrival of the new data center. Data centers in the Netherlands have come under fire in recent years because of their impact on the environment. For example, they can lead to a drinking water shortage due to the large amount of cooling water they use.

The municipalities of Amsterdam and Haarlemmermeer therefore decided earlier on a temporary construction stop. The municipality of Hollands Kroon, which includes Middenmeer, did issue a permit, but the province of North Holland put a stop to this.

The environmental service, which can issue permits on behalf of the province, has now examined the submitted documents and expects Microsoft to be allowed to continue building the data center.
