Microsoft released a preliminary update for Windows 11 on July 21, which includes new functionality to improve the update process on new Windows 11 devices.
The update functionality it contains KB5015882 will arrive in the August Cumulative Update for the Windows 11 operating system. Preview updates can be downloaded and installed earlier for testing purposes or to address critical issues. Generally speaking, preview updates should not be installed on most Windows 11 devices.
Microsoft lists the changes in its support website. Notable among these changes is the option to upgrade to a newer version of Windows 11 on first Windows startup if the device is eligible.
Another new feature is for eligible devices to upgrade to a newer version of Windows 11 during the out-of-box experience (OOBE) when you first sign in.
According to Microsoft’s description, the update enhancement is activated only during the out-of-box experience (OOBE) on the first boot of the operating system. Devices must meet the Windows 11 system requirements.
The OOBE is executed at the first boot of the operating system. Most users associate it with the initial setup experience that includes operating system privacy settings, language settings, region settings, and keyboard layout, among other features.
One thing that has caused confusion is that Microsoft reveals that this is an option, but does not say when the option is displayed during OOBE. It’s unclear if the new feature is limited to certain types of updates.
Cumulative updates seem like the most logical choice for this new update behavior, but Microsoft has yet to confirm this.
