Microsoft added support for Linux apps to older versions of Windows 10

Microsoft has released a new cumulative update KB4566116 for Windows 10 versions 1909 and 1903, which were launched in May and November 2019, respectively. The main feature of the update is that it brings along support for WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux), which allows users to run Linux executable files on Windows 10.

Recall that earlier WSL2 support was only implemented in Windows 10 (2004), which is also known as Windows 10 May 2020 Update. Obviously, the provision of WSL2 support is due to the fact that earlier versions of Windows 10 continue to be relevant and actively used, including in the corporate segment.

Thus, if it is necessary to organize a Linux environment, users will not have to accelerate the transition to Windows 10 (2004). The WSL2 implementation assumes the use of a full fledged Linux kernel, whereas the emulation system was previously used. It is worth noting that the Linux kernel in WSL2 is not part of Windows by default, but is dynamically loaded and updated using tools built into the operating system.

In addition, KB4566116 fixes a number of errors not related to the security of the software platform and other Microsoft products. For example, we fixed an issue with Outlook add-ins that could cause the application to crash in some cases. Fixed a bug due to which, in some cases, the hard disk overflows, etc. complete list The bugs that the update fixes can be found on the official Microsoft support page.
