Micropayments in Cyberpunk 2077. The network is down. CD Projekt RED responds

In recent days, there have been a lot of rumors and reports that the studio is in the network CD Project RED planned to “enrich” the gameplay in Cyberpunk 2077 with micropathist. These reports sparked a media storm. For years “Redzi” were praised by the community of gamers for the fact that their productions are completely devoid of the micropayment system.

Moreover, during work on Cyberpunk 2077, the Polish studio repeatedly stated that it did not intend to change its approach to this topic.

Do not worry. Think Cyberpunk 2077, at least think of The Witcher 3 – a great campaign for one player, open world, RPG driven by a story. No hidden catch, you get what you paid for – no crap, just fair play, like Wild Hunt. We leave greed to others.

the game’s creators translated in November 2017.

So why two months before Cyberpunk 2077’s premiere, the topic of in-game micropayments came back? Were “Redzi” going to withdraw from their promise?

Cyberpunk 2077 still without micropayments, but …

Paradoxically, this time the “storm in a glass of water” was caused by the CEO of CD Projekt, Adam Kiciñski. During a recent meeting with investors, he talked about his plans for the online version of Cyberpunk 2077. Let me point out here that it is an independent production that does not even have a release date.

Let me quote Kiciñski’s statements in full:

We are never aggressive towards our fans. We treat them fairly and we are friendly. Of course we won’t be aggressive, but you can expect great things to buy. The goal is to design monetization in such a way that people are happy when they spend their money. I’m not trying to be cynical or hiding anything, it’s about creating a sense of worth.

Same as with our single player games: we want players to be happy when they spend money on our products. The same goes for microtransactions: you can expect them, of course, and CP is a great place to sell, but it won’t be aggressive; it won’t upset the players, but it will make them happy – at least that’s our goal.

Taking these quotes out of context, one can conclude that – indeed – CD Projekt RED plans to introduce micropayments to Cyberpunk 2077. The context, however, is crucial here, as confirmed by the entry posted on Monday on Twitter by the game developers.

Nothing has changed. Cyberpunk 2077 is a single player game without any micropayments. One purchase. No tricks. Don’t believe clickbaits

– we read.

In summary, Cyberpunk 2077, the game that will hit stores on November 19, will not offer any micropayments or additional “hooks”. We will pay for it once. Nothing changes here.

The situation is different in the case of network mode. Everything is still possible here. I must admit that I am saddened by the fact that “Redzi” is considering following the path of EA and Ubisoft. Even if, as Kiciñski announces, the company treats us fairly, the same entry into micropayments may have a negative impact on the image of CD Projekt in the eyes of players.
