Michiel and Gijs helped their father die: ‘He died really happy and satisfied’ | Inland

Floor Haak from Vrouwenpolder was sure: he wanted to die. He asked his sons to help him with that. Michiel took care of his father for thirteen days, until the moment came. Gijs filmed everything, for a moving documentary. “For our father this was a godsend, but for us it was also very special.”

At the beginning of 2019, Michiel Haak receives a call from his father. “The time has come,” his message reads. “I’m ready now.” The 86-year-old Floor Haak thinks it has been nice. He consciously chooses death, by stopping eating and drinking. It must be done in his own house, beautifully situated just outside the Zeeuwse Vrouwenpolder.

Michiel and his brother Gijs are not surprised. “It has been a process of years and it also suited my father,” says Michiel, two and a half years later. “This was exactly what he wanted. I don’t know if I would ever do it this way myself. But if someone really wants to get out, then I think this is nice. It’s like an animal that feels it can’t go any further. It lays down somewhere in a deserted place and waits until it dies. I also had no doubts about helping him with that.”
