Michael Jackson Master Tapes Lawsuit Threat: Rare Recordings Removed from Auction Site

25 analog master tapes that capture Michael Jackson performing songs at The Hit Factory recording studio in New York in 1994, were removed from an auction site, after the legal representative of the late singer’s estate threatened to file a lawsuit this week, as confirmed by Rolling Stone.

These recordings, which are presumed rare and valuable, include previously unreleased performances of songs such as “Lost in Love,” “Like U,” “New Jelly,” and “Rescue Me.” Auction house Gotta Have Rock and Roll unveiled the 25 2-inch metal master tapes last month, generating interest among both collectors and Jackson’s own estate.

Each tape was expected to reach a value between $500 and $4 thousand dollarsand were marketed as “unique artifacts” without copyright, with strict prohibitions on reproduction.

The threat of a lawsuit materialized through a letter sent by the lawyer Alex Spiro to the auction site last Tuesday. Spiro, known for representing notable figures such as Jay-Z, Megan Thee Stallion and Elon Musk, warned that he was about to seek a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the auction house in New York County Supreme Court. .

In the letter, Spiro claimed to represent Jackson’s estate and offered to send relevant legal documents via email before proceeding with legal action.

Previously, attorney Jonathan Steinsapir, also representing Jackson’s estate, had sent a cease-and-desist letter on Nov. 29, asking the company to cancel the auction and arrange for the tapes to be returned to the estate.

The auctioneer’s response on December 6 was reportedly a clear refusal to comply with the demands.

According to Rolling Stone, Gotta Have Rock and Roll removed the 25 tapes from its website after receiving Spiro’s letter.
