Mexico will approve Moderna’s vaccine against covid-19 “very soon”

Mexico will approve “very soon” the vaccine of the Modern pharmaceutical company against covid-19, which has a similar technological profile to that of Pfizer, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reported this Saturday.

“Good news: soon, very soon, the Modern vaccine with a technological profile similar to that of Pfizer will be approved in Mexico,” the official said on his official Twitter account.

He also said that this presents “more and better options” for Mexico’s vaccination plan for the remainder of the year and the one already designed for 2022.

In addition, he reported that so far Mexico has received a total of 73.7 million doses from 6 pharmaceutical companies that have sent shipments to the country since December 23, 2020.

Just this morning, a million doses of Sinovac arrived, with which it is expected to continue with the vaccination plan that until this Friday cut added more than 37.3 million vaccinated people, which represents 42% of the population older than 18 years-old.

This is in line with the objective of the Mexican government, which has reiterated on several occasions its goal of having everyone over 18 years of age vaccinated in October, at least with a first dose.

Last Tuesday, faced with the evident third wave of COVID-19 infections, the Government of Mexico insisted that the advance of vaccination in the country is curbing both deaths and hospital admissions, and did not announce any additional measure of social restriction .

For this reason, the health authorities have opted for vaccination as a measure to mitigate the lethality of the pandemic that adds more than 2.6 million confirmed cases and exceeds 236,000 deaths due to the coronavirus.

Mexico remains the fourth country in the world with the most deaths from covid-19, behind the United States, Brazil and India, and is sixteenth in number of confirmed infections, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.
