Mexico presents four cases of covid-19 to three days of friendly against Uruguay

Sports Writing, May 30 (EFE) .- The Mexican Football Federation reported this Monday that the Mexican soccer team has four positive cases of covid-19, one of them a soccer player, prior to their confrontation against Uruguay in a friendly match this Thursday at the State Farm Stadium in Arizona in the United States.

“The results received today show one player and four asymptomatic positive staff members. The precautionary measures dictated by the protocol will continue, to avoid further contagion among all members,” the federation announced in a press release.

The tests to detect cases of covid-19 in the ‘Tri’ were carried out this Sunday, one day after Mexico defeated Nigeria 2-1 in a friendly duel at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The Mexicans were in the routine protocols before traveling to Arizona to face Uruguay in their third preparation match for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Reports from the local press indicate that the patient with covid-19 would be one of the defenders that the Argentine Gerardo Martino, coach of Mexico, summoned not only for the matches against Nigeria and Uruguay, but for the friendly duel against Ecuador this Sunday and in those of the Concacaf Nations League against Suriname and Jamaica on June 11 and 14, respectively.

Martino’s ‘Tri’ began their preparation for Qatar in April with a goalless draw against Guatemala and continued with last Saturday’s win against Nigeria.

Mexico finished in second place in the Concacaf World Cup qualifiers with 28 points, the same as leader Canada, to confirm in Qatar.

In the World Cup, Mexico will seek to overcome the barrier of the round of 16, a phase that has not passed in the last seven World Cups.
