Mexico City to Invest Over 19.5 Billion Pesos in Public Works for 2024

THE CAPITAL GOVERNMENT WILL INVEST MORE THAN 19 THOUSAND 500 MILLION PESOS IN PUBLIC WORKS DURING 2024

● The Head of Government, Martí Batres Guadarrama, highlighted that the current administration invests in public works more than ever, with 19,570 million pesos coming from the capital and federal governments, for the conclusion of 21 projects such as Chapultepec: Nature and Culture , “El Insurgente” Interurban Train, educational and mobility infrastructure, construction of the Living Museum of Muralism, pedestrianization of the Zócalo, among others.

● The Secretary of Works and Services, Jesús Antonio Esteva Media, reported that 360 million pesos will be allocated for educational infrastructure; 125.7 million pesos for waste management; 300 million pesos for the construction of more than 200 kilometers of Safe Paths “Walk Free, Walk Safe”; 1,057 million pesos for conservation of the Primary Road Network; 600 million pesos for the expansion of Line 12 and 170 million pesos for releveling Line 9 of the Metro Collective Transportation System (STC); and 5,870 million pesos for the conclusion of the “El Insurgente” Train

The Head of Government, Martí Batres Guadarrama, presented the 2024 Works Program, to which 19,570 million pesos (mdp) will be allocated to carry out 21 priority projects distributed across seven axes of action: City of Rights; Sustainable City; Public space; Road infrastructure; More and Better Mobility; Cultural Capital of America; and Chapultepec: Nature and Culture.

“Public works is one of the great axes of the Government of Mexico City, we are doing much more public works than in the last administration, in fact, there are areas where we have increased investment in public works by up to 80 percent. (…) We are going to invest 19,570 million pesos in this Works Program and this Works Program will help us provide better services in all areas, in all areas, but also, it will allow us to help to the movement of the economy,” he expressed.

Martí Batres highlighted the pedestrianization of the capital’s Zócalo and the construction of the Living Museum of Muralism as great contributions to the cultural life of Mexico City, as well as the carrying out of works in collaboration with the Government of Mexico.

“Among the most notable works are, for example, projects that we are doing with the Government of the Republic such as ‘Chapultepec: Nature and Culture’ and the ‘El Insurgente’ Interurban Train, which are very important. (…) In the case of mobility we continue to give a lot of importance to this area, there is the Trolleybus on Avenida Aztecas, which crosses the Pedregales of Coyoacán; and, of course, also the releveling of Metro Line 9, among other works that we are carrying out,” he noted.

The Secretary of Works and Services, Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, explained that the “City of Rights” axis contemplates an investment of 360 million pesos for the structural reinforcement, rehabilitation and maintenance of 91 basic education schools, located in 13 Mayor’s Offices: Álvaro Obregón, Azcapotzalco, Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, Magdalena Contreras, Miguel Hidalgo, Tláhuac, Venustiano Carranza and Xochimilco. In addition, the second phase of the Health University, with 20 million pesos for sports areas, exercisers, open-air theater, closed circuit and air conditioning; completion of 870 m2 of the Vasco de Quiroga and Central de Abasto Social Assistance and Integration Centers (CAIS), with 40 million pesos; and the rehabilitation and maintenance of six fire stations in Cuauhtémoc, Tacubaya, Tláhuac and Gustavo A. Madero with 93 million pesos.

He highlighted that the “Sustainable City” axis is dedicated to waste management, with a budget of 125.7 million pesos for the conclusion of the Construction Waste Treatment Plant; maintenance of four Transfer Stations in Iztapalapa, Venustiano Carranza, Tlalpan and Milpa Alta; maintenance of the San Juan de Aragón Complex; and maintenance of the Compost Plant.

While the “Public Space” axis contemplates the construction of more than 200 kilometers of Safe Paths “Walk Free, Walk Safely”, with an investment of 300 million pesos for the intervention of 77 roads and lighting of avenues in the 16 Municipalities, with the goal of reaching the goal of 1,120 kilometers. Likewise, it contemplates 50 million pesos for the Pedestrianization of the Plaza de la Constitución.

“As for the Pedestrianization project, we have already been advancing in the topographic surveys, in the surveys, in the project, the development of the executive project, these are the first objective images that we have about what this project will be. We are starting preliminary work, we estimate in one more week, right now you can see the surveyors looking at the drainage issue, above all, which is an important issue to resolve,” he indicated.

Regarding “Road Infrastructure”, he indicated that 1,057 million pesos will be allocated for the conservation of the rolling surface of the Primary Road Network, which is equivalent to 2 million square meters of resurfacing, patching and mapping; 220 million pesos for conservation of road infrastructure with signage, street furniture, geometric adaptations and pedestrian crossings; 4,876 million pesos for daily cleaning, conservation of parks and green areas, and removal of graffiti; 1,243 million pesos for the asphalt mixture production plant; and 30 million pesos for the maintenance of 96 kilometers that include 12 bicycle lanes.

“This means that we will have attended to practically the entire primary road network at the level of preventive and corrective conservation,” he commented.

For the “More and Better Mobility” axis, the investment of 275 million pesos for the construction of two pedestrian bridges on Avenida Constituciónntes stood out; connection gateway between Cablebús Line 1 and Line 3 of the STC Metro, in Indios Verdes; and maintenance of 61 pedestrian bridges. Additionally, he said, 245 million pesos for maintenance of 45 vehicular bridges; reinforcement of the vehicular access bridge to the Modal Transfer Center (CETRAM) Tláhuac; and rescue of the Miguel Bernard vehicular bridge.

He mentioned that 240 million pesos will be allocated for the development of the Aztecas Trolleybus line, which will run from Tasqueña to Perisur and will have a length of 7.3 kilometers with 15 stations. He added that 150 million pesos will be invested for the maintenance of the confined lane of Metrobús lines 1, 2, 5 and 6; 600 million pesos for the expansion of Line 12 of the STC Metro; 170 million pesos in the releveling of Line 9 of the STC Metro; 5,870 million pesos for the conclusion of the “El Insurgente” Train; and 70 million pesos in complementary works of CETRAM Indios Verdes.

“Expansion of Line 12. This year 600 million pesos are allocated, with this the connection to Mixcoac will be concluded, what they call ‘El Pantalón’; and the tunnel at the level of one of the stations that we find anthropic fills, and that leads us to be moving forward with very rigorous construction processes and we will be concluding this year those 90 meters and the entire tunnel and the entire connection from Mixcoac to Observatory,” he explained.

Finally, he said, the “Cultural Capital of the World” axis proposes the construction of the Living Museum of Muralism, in conjunction with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP), with an investment of 290 million pesos . While for the “Chapultepec Nature and Culture” Project, 1,311 million pesos will be allocated to the conclusion of Cablebús Line 3; National Cinematheque; National Art Winery; and roads of the Fourth Section of the Forest, to connect with Avenida Constituciónntes.
