Mexicans renew their cell phone despite inflation – El Sudcaliforniano

The second half of the year will be positive for the smartphone market, according to specialists consulted by El Sol de México, despite the inflationary period and a drop in consumer confidence.

The reason that will ensure the performance of the smartphone industry will be the prices and offers of the companies, which are currently focused on the mid-range.

“Success will largely depend on how timely and aggressive its promotional campaigns are, a key factor that has allowed one of the main players to take advantage of this fight to be number one in the Mexican market,” said Ivonne López, spokeswoman for Tiendeo México, a platform dedicated to the analysis of offers in various sectors.

According to this company, in the last year, Mexicans have focused more on looking for offers and promotions for mid-range cell phones than cheap cell phones. High-end cell phones represent 30 percent of searches, mid-range 52 percent and low-end 18 percent, according to Tiendeo Mexico.

The data from the platform indicates that, from January to May, the search for cell phones on the Internet had a monthly growth of 12 percent.

“We have noticed that electronic devices such as video game consoles, audio speakers, cables and accessories for these, continue to be one of the products with the greatest demand in electronic commerce,” said Ezequiel Rubin, director of Olist Mexico, a company dedicated to the implementation of electronic commerce for SMEs.

“We are sure that this trend will continue in the coming months, mainly due to the need for consumers to purchase this type of item via the Internet,” added the manager.

SHIPPING OF EQUIPMENT STALLS

During the first quarter of the year, the shipment of smartphones to Mexico stagnated compared to the same period in 2021, due to logistical problems caused by the health crisis, according to a report by the international consulting firm Counterpoint.

Most of the devices sent to the country were from Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo and OnePlus, which increased competition between companies such as Apple or Samsung, and helped to reduce the market contraction.

“Most of the largest countries in Latin America followed the regional trend of declines. Mexico was flat year-on-year, driven by the entry of Chinese brands into the market and increased competition,” said Andrés Silva, a research analyst at consulting firm Counterpoint.

These Chinese brands stand out for offering mid-range phones with prices ranging from three thousand to 10 thousand pesos, and have internal storage of 64 or 128 GB and up to more than two rear cameras or a high-resolution front camera. According to The Competitive Intelligence Unit, if this trend continues, OPPO will be one of the top three mid-range and high-end brands.
