Mexican Players Repatriated from Europe: Decline in Presence of Aztec Footballers

Between 2023 and 2024, Mexican players have been repatriated by clubs in the Liga MX after a long or short stay in Europe, leaving less and less presence of Aztec footballers in the Old Continent.

Although the media, fans or the players themselves may say that returning to the country is not synonymous with failureThe truth is that the Mexican National Team loses arguments against other national teams that have more players in Top leagues (Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, etc.). Just The United States has the largest number of players active in Europe with approximately 40, while Mexico has 10.

As the president of Liga MX said, Mikel Arriolaafter the embarrassing role that the Tricolor played in the 2022 World Cup: “The results that we saw recently are that the countries that have the most players in Europe are the ones that are most likely to win games in a World Cup, so we are going to be absolutely concentrated from Liga MX to increase the export of soccer players”, but in the last year only the export of Luis Chávez was achieved.

With the return of Gerardo Arteaga yesterday and the possible signing of Jorge Sánchez to Cruz Azul, the number of Mexicans in Europe is considerably reduced. Another point to keep in mind is that, most of those that still compete in European football are in mid-table teams or even with relegation problems, as is the case of Guillermo Ochoa with Salernitana and César Montes with Almería.
