‘Mexican crime journalist tortured and beheaded’ | Abroad

A Mexican journalist who wrote about the violent organized crime in his country was found beheaded on Wednesday, local media report. The reporter’s gruesome murder is not an isolated one. Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists.

The remains of Julio Valdivia (44), along with his motorcycle, were found in the remote town of Tezonapa in the state of Veracruz. Valdivia was considered a practitioner of the note roja genre, a sensational journalism genre that tells in detail about violent crimes and is very popular in Mexico.

A colleague of Valdivia at the local newspaper Diario El Mundo in Veracruz says that it was initially suspected that the crime reporter had been hit by a train, but the prosecutor has now ruled out. “Valdivia has been found off the rails, decapitated and tortured,” said the newspaper employee, who wished to remain anonymous.

As far as is known, Valdivia is already the fourth journalist to be killed in Mexico this year. Last year, about half of all murders of journalists worldwide took place in Mexico.

The journalist would have received threats months ago. A local media protection group called CEAPP said in a statement that Valdivia was denied protection and had not reported being threatened. The group demands clarification from the authorities about the murder. The state government of Veracruz condemns the murder.
