Metz. Did you know that the Center Pompidou-Metz could have been in Nancy?

For ten years now, the Center Pompidou-Metz has been the pride of Messins. It has welcomed four million visitors since its opening and, above all, has helped transform the image of Metz in France and in Europe. No one can imagine Metz without the Center Pompidou any more… However, the first decentralization of Beaubourg could have landed elsewhere, notably among our good neighbors in Nancy.

Lille, Caen, Montpellier and Nancy

It is the honorary mayor of Metz, Jean-Marie Rausch, who tells this story in his memoirs (Just want to , published by Serpenoise): “Jean-Jacques Aillagon, then Minister of Culture, confided to my assistant, Christine Raffin, that he was looking to create a branch of the Center Pompidou in the provinces, but that the investment or supported by a local authority. He had contacted Lille, Caen, Montpellier and Nancy in vain, but the mayors concerned had all refused for financial reasons ”.

“So, are you giving up?” “

Subsequently, a lunch is therefore organized between Jean-Jacques Aillagon and Jean-Marie Rausch. The former mayor gives his account of this meeting: “Jean-Jacques Aillagon explained to me his project which he estimated should cost 25 million euros. I thought, for my part, that it was necessary to at least double this figure … So you give up ? he asked me. My response was: No, I take, subject to the agreement of my municipal council, that I am responsible for convincing. »

In the end, the Center Pompidou-Metz will have cost € 72.5 million. Nancy, for her part, has embarked on her major renovation project for the Lorraine Museum.
