Methane Explosion in Kostenko Mine: 21 Miners Dead, Investigation Commenced

In Kazakhstan, in the Karaganda region, a methane explosion occurred in the Kostenko mine. About it reports press service of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC, which owns the mine.

The company said that at the time of the incident there were 252 miners in the mine, 208 of them were brought to the surface. The company reported 21 miners dead, with another 23 miners remaining in the mine.

“Presumably, a gas methane explosion occurred in the lava,” the company said in a statement.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokaev instructed the government to stop investment cooperation with ArcelorMittal Temirtau. A government commission has been created to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan reports on the commencement of a pre-trial investigation under an article on violation of safety rules during mining or construction work.

On site “ArcelorMittal Temirtau” it saysthat the company is the largest enterprise in the mining and metallurgical sector. It is part of the steelmaking concern ArcelorMittal, which acquired the plant in the mid-1990s. Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov claimedthat over the past 15 years, more than 100 people have died at the company’s facilities.
