What can fit into an almost endless book?

Imagine a book that contains photos of absolutely everything. If the size of the photo is 1000 by 1000 pixels and each pixel can express 100 different colors, then the number of combinations is ten to one hundred. If we think about the content of the book, it will contain a photograph of absolutely everything we have on Earth, but also absolutely everything we don’t have here. And then a lot of nonsense. Will there be a list of the winners of Velká Pardubická for the next 100 years? Yes! Mathematician Doc talks about a strange book. Miroslav Zelený from the UK MFFF.

Birth of the largest Czech observatory

The dome of the observatory in Ondřejov

125 years ago, on January 21, 1898, the fine mechanic Josef Frič bought an almost three-hectare, partly wooded plot of land on the top of Manda near the town of Ondřejov for 900 gold. The first, temporary observatory became a wooden shed in an enclosure on a slope. The construction of the observatory did not begin until 1905, when Frič saved up the necessary funds. He made the first astronomical observation at Ondřejov in early August 1906. We recalled the interesting history of the observatory, which today belongs to the AV Astronomical Institute, in the column It Happened This Day, prepared by Ing. Francis Houdek.

Video of New Supercomputer Simulation Sheds Light on Moon’s Origin

No, it is not complete nonsense, as it might seem at first glance. A new computer simulation of the formation of the moon shows that a cosmic body the size of Mars crashed into the Earth. His name is Theia. A piece of material from which the Moon was formed came out of the Earth. Everything was melted and mixed. It means that the rest of this body is somewhere below the Earth’s surface. Where? How was the moon formed? What happened then? Pavel Gabzdyl from the Observatory and Planetarium in Brno spoke about this.

What does the Mona Lisa have to do with butterflies?

autumn, colors, butterfly, butterfly peacock eye

Some animals use protective coloration to blend in with the terrain and not be noticed by a predator. But other vulnerable individuals do the exact opposite. They try to be conspicuous. Beautifully colored peacock feathers are a shining example. It’s as if the peacock butterfly was also inspired by it. His wings seemed to be looking at us. The concentric circles look really like eyes. Scientists have investigated what their meaning is. Is it similar to Mona Lisa eyes? Biologist Prof. Jaroslav Petr.

How to control fire?

Flames and fire (illustrative photo)

The mastery of fire was an extremely important step in human evolution. To this day, people like to meet around the fire. But what happens when wood burns? It is a set of chemical reactions that are dangerous under certain circumstances. Prof. writes about it. Miroslav Raab, who works at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences. His book People Around the Table or Introduction to Interpersonal Chemistry was published by the Academia publishing house. It is an unconventional book, it is a mixture of life experiences, art, history and chemistry. Martina Preissová reads from it in Meteor.
