Meta’s Smart Glasses in Partnership with Ray-Ban: A Threat to Privacy?

Meta’s smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban could pose a threat to privacy, according to columnist Brian X. Chen of The New York Times.

The device is equipped with an LED light on the frame, which indicates to others when you are photographing or recording. If it is a photo, the light will flash momentarily. If it is a video, the light will be on during recording.

The feature is an attempt to warn people that they are being photographed and recorded. “We know that if we want to normalize smart glasses in everyday life, privacy must come first and be integrated into everything we do,” Meta wrote in a statement.

However, despite the device’s indicator light being on, no one noticed or confronted the journalist during the recordings made in public places.

Another negative point raised by the reporter concerns the loss of focus. Although the glasses are comfortable, he felt distracted while wearing them.

The distraction was noticed not only in atypical moments, such as in traffic, when the light from other cars’ headlights caused a “strong blue stroboscopic effect through the lenses of the glasses”. Chen also noted that the glasses made it difficult for him to concentrate during his regular climbing practice and even during his day-to-day work in front of the computer.

Finally, although they are equipped with a camera, speakers and microphones, apparently Meta’s glasses “don’t do much that we can’t already do with phones”, according to Chen.

Despite the criticism, the journalist pointed out that the glasses were successful in recording everyday situations that would normally be difficult, such as: cooking and walking dogs.
