Meta settles $725 million lawsuit against Cambridge Analytica – IT Pro – News

Let’s face it, my attitude is “We shouldn’t deliberately kill such a large company because of a major mistake by a small group of people within the company”, not “such a company shouldn’t go bankrupt”.

In my view it would also be unfair to investors, shareholders and employees, who were completely unaware of it. With a $5 billion fine in the US + fines in other countries + this class action, they will surely have enough motivation to prevent such moves from happening again, but they won’t suddenly lose everything.

The point I want to make is that punishments should not be exaggerated. Within large companies there will always be people who make unethical or even illegal decisions. This should be punished appropriately. But not too much either. The problem that in capitalism you come to your head if you make a lot of profit, not if you are a good and ethical person, is unsolved. Punishing so harshly for everything that comes to light that no one ever dares to be a whistleblower because of the social consequences is not the solution in my opinion.

But if meta invests a lot of money in a strange variant of VR chat that hardly anyone uses without a good business case and profit perspective, so it is no longer profitable and loses shareholder confidence, and therefore fails, then you will listen to me very much let’s say louder that such a company certainly doesn’t need to be kept afloat.
