In 2010, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and now in 2021 Messi won the “Trofeo Pichichi”.
For a long time Telmo Zarra, legendary athletic Bilbao’s goalscorer in the 1940s and 1950s, was the leader in this category with six Pichichi wins. Messi had already surpassed Zarra last season with seven successes – now he is building on his record. He outstrips Hugo Sanchez (Atlético and Real Madrid, 1985-88), who had won the Pichichi four times in a row with Messi.

Messi set a new record with 21 assists last season, but this season he has “only” nine assists. Four players are ahead of Messi in the assists category, most of them have reached Celta Vigo’s captain Iago Aspas, who has 13 assists this season. Behind them are Marcos Llorente (11), Toni Kroos and Yannick Carrasco (10).
The fact that Messi only has nine assists was more due to his teammates. Because no La Liga player has more chances (77) and big chances (22) than Messi, even with the fatal passes (20) the Argentine leads unsurprisingly, as well as with shots on goal (196) and successful dribbles (159 ). It’s nothing new, season after season Messi is setting incredible numbers in many categories and holding the best marks – and so continues to work on his legendary status.
In the race for the golden shoe as the top scorer in Europe Messi only had to admit defeat to Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern striker scored 41 goals for a total of 82 points, Messi finished second with 30 goals and 60 points – ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo (29 goals), André Silva (28 goals), Erling Haaland (27) and Kylian Mbappé (26). This leaves the FC Barcelona superstar with six golden shoes – Messi also holds the record here.
