Forward “Paris Saint-Germain” and the Argentina national team Lionel Messi became the winner of the Laureus World Sports Awards as the best athlete of last year, reported press office of the organization.

The award ceremony was held in Paris.

Messi became the first athlete in the history of the award to receive both an individual award and a team award in the same year – as part of the Argentina national team that won the World Cup in Qatar (in the “Team of the Year” nomination).

In the fight for the best athlete award, the Argentine beat French footballer Kylian Mbappe, Dutch Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen, Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal and American basketball player Stephen Curry.

The best athlete of the year was the three-time Olympic champion in running Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jamaica), Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz won the Breakthrough of the Year nomination, and Manchester United and Danish national team midfielder Christian Eriksen, who returned in big football after a cardiac arrest at the Euro.

The Laureus is known as the “sports Oscar”.
