Messestadt Riem – “Munich’s largest school construction site” – Munich

Yellow, white, and green cables hang from the ceiling. The cool air smells like concrete. “Although the sun is shining outside, it is always fresh on construction sites,” states the city school council and sports advisor Florian Kraus (Greens). This Friday he and the third mayor Verena Dietl (SPD) came to the topping-out ceremony at “Munich’s largest school construction site” – the education campus with sports park in the trade fair town of Riem.

The school campus is “an urgent place that we need for our students,” explains Verena Dietl. And there is a lot of that here in the trade fair city’s sports park: the school property covers 32,000 square meters. A six-class grammar school and a five-class secondary school will be accommodated here. Around 2,400 children and young people are to be taught on the education campus. There is also a more than three hectare sports park, two triple sports halls, grandstands and a swimming pool. “We’re moving with the times,” says Kraus. “It’s not all geared towards football anymore.” The various sports areas, he emphasizes, are “of course” also available to clubs for use after school has finished.

This “highlight in Munich’s educational landscape”, as Kraus calls the campus, is of course not exactly cheap. The city council approved 237 million euros for this in 2016. In 2017, the architecture firm h4a Gessert-Randecker Generalplaner won the competition for the major project with its design. Construction began two years later with the groundbreaking ceremony. The first schoolchildren should move in next year. The eight forerunner classes currently being taught at the state-run Michaeli-Gymnasium “are waiting eagerly”, formulates the city school board.

Outside, in front of the unfinished building, the topping-out wreath is not attached to the roof structure, as is usually the case. Instead, he hangs from a crane. There is still a classic judgment. Hans Obermeyer from the “Vier Hinterberger Musikanten” performs it in traditional costume and in Bavarian: The construction site is going without any problems, one is also in Munich and not in Berlin. Even if there have been no delays so far, Mayor Dietl thinks: “You can see that there is still a lot to do.” With the topping-out ceremony, the first half will be celebrated.
