Mermaidcore: The Summer Fashion Trend Taking the World by Storm

You see ‘The Little Mermaid’ everywhere these days. And in addition to the silver screen, she now also stranded in the fashion world. The trend is called ‘Mermaidcore’ and promises to be the fashion hit of the summer, both on the water and in the street. This is how you wear the style full of shells, fishnets and ocean blue tones.

Good news for fans of ‘The Little Mermaid’: Disney is not the only one liveaction version of the fairy tale unleashed on the public, this summer it’s also totally hip to dress like the main character Ariel. Mermaidcore called that trend.

Think ocean-inspired shades like navy and coral blue or sand. Dresses with shimmering and scaly textures or accessories with pearls and shells are also the ideal catch to complete your beach look.

The trend is certainly not new. During the spring/summer 2021 fashion weeks, several collections have already been inspired by the fauna and flora of the ocean. For example, the British fashion house Burberry brought a show that reflected an affair between a shark and a mermaid, and designer brand Versace came up with dresses full of shells and starfish.

The reason for the watery and fairytale collections? Designers have been drawing inspiration from nature for centuries, but that became even more important during the pandemic. The ocean thus became a source of strength and a symbol of escape from troubled times.

Both for parties and on a weekday

Now that the remake of ‘The Little Mermaid’ can now be seen everywhere, the trend is flaring up again. So got the hashtag #mermaidcore on the video app TikTok already more than 230 million views. And the trend is much more than shells and mermaid tails these days. It even looks chic.

Just look at the Oscar looks of ‘The Little Mermaid’ actress Halle Bailey and top model Miranda Kerr. Both opted for a coral blue and princess-like dress. Nineties-icon Naomi Campbell took it a step further and showed up in a gold dress with scales and a seashell bra.

The style also promises to score points this summer on the beach or at festivals, and not just if you’re a rich celeb. glittering bikinis, flowy skirts and bodysuits in sea-like colors are now available everywhere.
