Former US President Barack Obama visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington with Angela Merkel, who resigned last year as German chancellor, DPA reported.
“As president, I have witnessed Chancellor Merkel steer during crises with her wise pragmatism, good mood and relentless moral compass. And I feel happy to call her a friend,” Obama said in a Twitter message, accompanied by a photo of the two at the museum. BTA reported.
He said the museum was “a reminder that America is a constant work in development.”
In response to a DPA question, a Merkel spokesman in Berlin confirmed today that she had gone to Washington for “political talks after the end of her rule”.
He said Merkel arrived in Washington on Monday and will return to Berlin tomorrow.
