Mercedes F1 Team Leader “It’s a shame to lose Nick de Vries”[F1-Gate.com]

Mercedes F1 team chief engineer says it is a “disappointment” to lose Nick de Vries.

Nik de Vries made a one-off F1 debut with Williams F1 at this year’s F1 Italian Grand Prix thanks to his role as official reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 team, but will be second for Red Bull for 2023 Signed with the Alpha Tauri team.

But Franz Tost, team principal of Scuderia AlphaTauri F1, doubts Nick de Vries will start with the team soon this season in the form of Friday free practice.

“I don’t think he can do it because he still has a contract with another team,” said Franz Tost.

“I hope to see him at the Young Drivers Test in Abu Dhabi”.

It depends on Mercedes.

“What I see is a really nice guy, but a very knowledgeable guy who understands sports and understands automotive engineering,” said Mercedes chief engineer Mike Elliott.

“It’s a shame for our team to see him go somewhere, but at the same time we’re really happy for him.”

“It’s great to see a talented driver have such an opportunity.”

Helmut Marko, Red Bull F1 motorsports adviser, said De Vries would not take the lead despite Yuki Tsunoda, who is five years younger, established himself as a Formula 1 driver for Scuderia AlphaTauri. He also says he has the potential to function.

“Of course Alpha Tauri will benefit from Nick’s technical background,” said Helmut Marko.

“He has been able to drive several F1 cars this season so it’s great that he has that experience.”

“With his personality and experience, Nick should lead the team.”
