Mercedes-Benz Trucks Introduces the New eActros 600: A Game-Changing Electric Truck for Road Freight Transport

Mercedes-Benz Trucks revealed the new eActros 600, an electric truck which according to the manufacturer aims to become the new standard for road freight transport in terms of technology, sustainability, design and profitability for fleet operators. Sales will begin this year but production will only start towards the end of 2024. This new model is the result of long development work and features numerous technological innovations.

ENGINE AND CHARGING

Mercedes makes it known that it has paid a lot of attention to the design of the truck to optimize aerodynamics as much as possible, a very important aspect when we talk about this category of vehicles. This model is designed for a combined total weight of up to 44 t. With a standard semi-trailer the new eActros 600 has a payload of around 22 tonnes in the European Union.

For the truck, the German manufacturer has developed a new 800 V electric axle with two electric motors and a four-speed transmission specially designed for trucks of this type. Overall, the electric units can count on one peak power of 600 kW (400 kW continuous). The driver can select, depending on the driving conditions, five different levels of energy recovery. Through the Digital Cockpit it is possible to activate the “one pedal” driving mode.

The new eActros 600 can count on three battery packs, each of 207 kWh, for overall capacity of 621 kWh. Accumulators adopt LFP (lithium iron phosphate) type cells. The engineers involved in the development of the electric truck have worked to ensure that the eActros 600 offers the same duration as the endothermic model. This means up to 1.2 million km in ten years of operation.

After this period of use, according to Mercedes, the “State of Health” of the battery should still be above 80%. Furthermore, unlike other technologies, with LFP technology it is possible to use approximately 95% of the installed capacity.

Speaking of autonomy, Mercedes claims that its truck is capable of travel 500 km without the need to recharge. Indeed, with one charge, it is possible to undertake a journey of up to 1,000 km in one day. However, the German brand highlights that around 60% of its customers’ long-distance journeys in Europe are less than 500 km anyway.

As for charging, the new eActros 600 can refuel up to one power of 400 kW in direct current. Later, the truck will also have the ricarica megawatt (MCS) which will allow you to go from 20 to 80% of the charge in about 30 minutes. The powertrain features the Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) management system which evaluates a series of parameters to allow you to adopt the most efficient driving style possible.

Also standard is the Multimedia Cockpit Interactive 2 which constantly informs the driver on the battery charge level, remaining range and energy consumption.
