Mercedes-Benz AG Launches Latest Generation G-Class: Features, Improvements, and Pricing – All You Need to Know

Jakarta

Mercedes-Benz AG launched the latest generation G-Class globally on Tuesday (26/4/24). Even though its appearance has not changed radically, this latest generation G-Class is claimed to be more perfect and increasingly capable of hard work.

Markus Schäfer as Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG Chief Technology Officer Chief Technology Officer said that this latest generation G-Class comes with new technology typical of Mercedes-Benz which is claimed to improve the driving experience and the driver’s digital experience.

“The latest generation of the G-Class raises the bar for real adventure on and off-road. With our portfolio of electric drives, track record as a pioneer in the MBUX infotainment system, as well as additional comfort and off-road functionality, we are ready
to continue his success story as The Geländewagen,” said Schäfer in an official statement.

Still Iconic Design!

The letter ‘G’ in the G-Class name is an abbreviation of Geländewagen which literally means all-terrain vehicle. This G-Class model was first launched by Mercy in 1979. However, until now the model still looks the same, boxy and iconic.

The appearance of this latest generation G-Class still has the same nuances as the previous generation. In fact, according to Mercy, this design has not changed significantly in 45 years.

However, the most obvious change in this latest generation G-Class is in the radiator grille model which is decorated with four horizontal lines. Apart from that, the front bumper also gets a new look which they call the squircle look. Mercy also made this refresh to the rear view of the G-Class.

Apart from that, other quite radical changes to the external appearance are also found in the A-pillar cladding model and the spoiler lip at the corner of the roof. Where, the design revision makes the G-Class more aerodynamic and more perfect acoustically.

“Classic details continue to be its hallmark. These include distinctive door handles and distinctive door closing sounds, solid exterior protective trim, an exposed spare wheel on the rear door and prominent indicator lights,” wrote Mercedes-Benz in its official statement.

There is a new color that Mercy is offering for this latest G-Class model, namely Sodalite Blue Metallic. Then for the design package, the latest G-Class is offered in Professional Line, Exclusive Line and AMG Line options.

The interior of this latest G-Class has also been refreshed by Mercy. However, a significant new feature that makes a difference to the previous generation is quick access to the OFFROAD COCKPIT. Not to be missed, Mercy also installed a 12.3 inch MBUX infotainment system for the cockpit of this car.

More Standard for Off-Road

Mercy claims this G-Class sets a new standard in the off-road segment. Where, this car which comes with a ladder-frame platform comes with legs that are capable of crushing all terrain.

It is claimed that this latest generation G-Class can devour puddles of water and mud up to a depth of 70 cm. This car is also stable when driven on inclined surfaces up to 35 degrees. In addition, to navigate uneven surfaces, the latest generation G-Class has a front approach angle of 31 degrees and a rear departure angle of 30 degrees.

This latest generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class also comes with Trail, Rock and Sand driving modes which have been developed to tackle difficult terrain. This feature is a companion to DYNAMIC SELECT which has long been present in most Mercedes-Benz models.

Another improvement that Mercy has given to the latest G-Class to make it easier in off-road conditions is the ‘transparent bonnet’. Where, this car can display images from a 360 degree camera which are processed virtually and can show the front, back, side and under the car.

Wild and Sophisticated Machines

This latest generation G-Class comes with a ‘shocked’ engine. Like most other models, Mercy also incorporates mild hybrid technology with an integrated starter-generator (ISG) and 48 volt electrical device.

“Thanks to electrification, the new model also offers better responsiveness and greater comfort. The next models besides the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 are the all-new All New Mercedes-Benz G 500 and the All New Mercedes-Benz G 450 D,” wrote Mercedes-Benz.

The Mercedes-Benz G 500 has a 3.0 liter inline six-cylinder engine with twin turbocharging. This petrol engine is claimed to have 449 HP and peak torque of 560 Nm. Thanks to hybrid assistance, this engine can also get an additional power boost of 20 HP and 200 Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz G 450 d has a 3.0 liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine with a claimed maximum power of 367 HP and peak torque of 750 Nm. Hybrid boost makes this engine increase in power by 20 HP and torque by 200 Nm.

For transmission matters, Mercedes-Benz has entrusted this latest generation G-Class with the responsive and tough 9G-TRONIC transmission. Apart from that, the transfer case is also claimed to be good for off-roading.

In this latest generation, Mercy also presents the Mercedes-AMG G 63. This car comes with a sportier look and a fiercer engine than its ‘normal’ sibling.

The Mercedes-AMG G63 has a 4.0 liter V8 biturbo engine with a maximum power of 585 HP and 850 Nm of torque. This engine is also mated to a 48-volt hybrid system and ISG so that its power can increase by 20 HP and 200 Nm of torque in a matter of seconds. Acceleration is claimed from 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.

Distinctive, sophisticated technology, AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL Suspension is also present on the Mercedes-AMG G63. This car’s suspension can be actively adjusted, has hydraulic roll stabilization, and adaptive adjustable damping which makes a significant contribution when playing on the ground.

Latest Mercedes-Benz G-Class Selling Price

Regarding the selling price, it’s a shame that Mercedes-Benz is reluctant to divulge the information. However, as reported by Carwow, this latest generation G-Class can be purchased next year for the British market.

According to rumors circulating, the selling price of this car in its standard variant reaches 40,000 pounds sterling or the equivalent of IDR 800 million. However, keep in mind, this price is the rumored price for the latest generation Mercedes-Benz G Class in the European region.

For comparison, in Indonesia, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG G 63 model is sold at a price of IDR 6,580 billion in off-road status.
