Hamilton: Something’s wrong with Mercedes cars at Silverstone
Lewis Hamilton believes there is clearly something wrong with his Mercedes-AMG car after he was unable to make any progress on the soft tires during Friday’s free practice at the British GP.
The seven-time world champion and his team-mate George Russell have adopted a different running scheme than other teams in their first day of racing at home, avoiding the use of soft tires in FP1.
However, when softer compound tires were used in FP2 in the afternoon, they failed to make progress in lap times. Hamilton could only run 15th, while Russell was slightly better and ranked 12th. Confused about this situation.
Speaking about Friday’s free practice session at home, Hamilton said: “Most of the time we were battling the same problem, the car was hard to drive.”
“No matter how we adjust the settings, it is still difficult to control. In terms of single-lap performance, I can’t feel the improvement of the tire difference, which means that something must be wrong, we seem to be missing something. But in the long distance It’s not too bad on one side, so there’s at least one positive side to it.”
Hamilton also said that it wasn’t so clear that they were competitive even in terms of race speed, as he didn’t get up to speed until the very end, adding: “If I’m being honest, the long-distance performance It doesn’t feel particularly good either. But for other people, it feels worse because they’re not going as fast or maybe they’ve worn out more tires.”
“It wasn’t until the last part of my run that things started to stabilize. I don’t know why. It could be the wind, it could be finding the balance, or I’m starting to get used to the car setup.”

Russell said that there is no obvious explanation for this situation, so they need to conduct in-depth analysis before Saturday’s schedule. He said: “This is by no means our best Friday practice session. I think the conditions tomorrow It will be different, but we’ll have to try to figure out where the problem is because with the mediums and the FP1 we’ve got pretty good speed.”
