Mercadona increases the sale of olives and pickles during confinement | Radio Valencia

Mercadona, a physical supermarket and online sales company, has increased its sales of olives and pickles by 45% due to changes in consumer habits, since now “El Jefe” (customer) makes the appetizer at home, said this Monday in a statement the chain.

The company has more than 100 different references of olives and pickles, available according to the habits and customs of the area where the store is located.

Among all the assortment, the ‘lollipop’ olives made by the Supplier Totaler Olives Guadalquivir de Andalucía stand out, increasing their sales by 8,000 units a day, 65% more than before.

“This product, available in all stores in Spain, surprises the customer for its flavor and its characteristic natural green color, and for offering them in a reusable jar,” they commented.

Regarding Alicante suppliers, both La Española and Cazorla Olives share the production of olives stuffed with anchovies in the chain.

In addition, La Española also produces olives stuffed with jalapeño and pepper, as well as homemade and gazpacha. For its part, Cazorla Olives, in addition to stuffed ones, also makes black olives for the supermarket chain, with the exception of the cuquillo variety, as well as canned olives cocktail and green and black olives cocktail.

These suppliers in 2019 have been joined by another supplier from Alicante, specifically Aceitunas Bernal, from Callosa de Segura, who prepares for Mercadona the refrigerated green olive. It is a traditional unpasteurized olive with fewer preservatives and additives and can be found in the chain’s cold murals.

At the moment, it is found in 101 stores, 27 of which are in the province of Alicante and will gradually spread to the rest of the stores in the province.

These products, made by more than 30 different suppliers, are characterized by being a regular snack for any time of the day. Olives, considered superfoods, stand out for their beneficial properties; and pickles, for being rich in protein and low in fat.
