Mendel University had a cowshed built in the 21st century

The new stable replaced one old one, which no longer complied with the current concept of animal welfare, ie the protection of animal welfare.

Cattle and especially cow breeding is a priority for ŠZP in Žabčice. “Cattle breeding in dry years slightly exceeds 60 percent of the company’s production and provides the necessary stability and added value with the created feed overhangs,” said the company’s director Radomil Měřínský.

In Žabčice, the university currently breeds approximately 600 cows with an average productivity of approximately 11,300 liters of milk per head per year.

No fans needed

Two years ago, the school company built new silage troughs for 20 million, now it has invested in a new stable. In a building that does not have perimeter walls, compared to other cowsheds, the fans will not hum – the roof insulation will not let heat in.

Another advantage is the ventilation slit, which is part of the dormer. All you have to do is press the switch and with the help of electric motors, the slots open hydraulically.

“The ideal temperature for cows is around eight to ten degrees. In winter, it is enough to lower the tarpaulins replacing the perimeter masonry only at a minus outdoor temperature, ”Měřínský explained.

Use in teaching

The director of ŠZP had another special requirement for the designer: a metal fence inside the building, which separates the cattle from the students participating in the practical training.

“The new stable is literally tailored to our needs. We wanted the object to be as friendly as possible for about seventy cows and heifers of the meat type for which it is intended. At the same time, we wanted a building built on a technical level so that we could use it for teaching. We created not only a stable according to our ideas, but also a trend that we want to follow in the further construction of cowsheds, “he added.

ŠZP Žabčice farms a total of 2334 hectares of agricultural land and breeds approximately 1,200 cattle. The largest part of them consists of 600 dairy cattle, Holstein breed, with a capacity of 11,300 liters of milk.

“In 2017, even the Holstein cow Kája from the Žabčice company became the most beautiful dairy cow in the Czech Republic at a competition held at the Brno Exhibition Center,” said Filip Vrána, spokesman for Mendel University.
