Member of the state parliament calls for the Bavarian flag for WhatsApp and Co.

This is what the “Bavaria Emoji” could look like: The Landtag member Tobias Gotthardt (Free Voters) asked Facebook Germany to design a Bavarian flag for WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram. −Photo: Gotthardt

WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram: the digital communication services offer their users a wide range of “emojis” to decorate their messages. A MdL now also wants a “Bayern Emoji”.

“Emojis” are digital pictograms: from the laughing face to the purring hangover to national flags, almost everything is included. But one “emoji” is missing, finds member of the state parliament Tobias Gotthardt (Free Voters): the Bavarian flag. As chairman of the European committee, he has now asked the managing director of Facebook Germany, David Kling, to introduce the white and blue national flag.

Gotthardt thinks it’s “a shame” that Bavaria doesn’t have its own emoji, he said via press release. Almost everyone around the world knows and loves Bavaria and its culture – with the exception of Facebook: “Let your creative minds also design the Bavaria flag – a simple white and blue is enough, it doesn’t have to be a lion or a diamond – and give it to us and all friends of Bavaria around the world Image to show our love for the Free State digitally too, “Gotthardt turned to the Facebook group.

The politician got the idea from his children: “They wanted to send me greetings from home during a long plenary session and decorate the message with some Bavaria flags.” But they looked in vain for the Bavarian flag. That’s why Gotthardt’s youngest son sent his papa a “complaint” afterwards. In a voice message, the boy complained: “There is no Bavaria on WhatsApp, that’s stupid – you have to change that. You’re a politician.”

MdL feels challenged

When listening to these words, Gotthardt had to smile at first, according to the press release. And yet the MdL felt challenged: “Somehow you are right.” While still in the plenary hall, he typed his letter to David Kling from Facebook Germany: “Oktoberfest is known all over the world, Bavarian culture enjoys an all-round good reputation and all over the world some people think of the Alps and Lederhose when they describe Germany. Everyone, like that you think you know Bavaria – except for WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger. “

According to Gotthardt, the list of emojis certainly has regional flags. “Scotland and Wales, both part of the United Kingdom, can also be found in the colorful pool of your emojis.”

It is still pending, the answer from the Facebook headquarters in Hamburg. For Tobias Gotthardt it is clear: “I would be very happy to use the white and blue Emoij regularly in my messages soon. And I’m sure: I wouldn’t be the only one.” − pnp
