Mel claimed she was mentally and physically abused in her marriage to Stephen, something he always denied. In addition, she was also financially abused, as she did not have access to her own money. She shared that throughout her marriage, she “continued to pretend that everything was okay,” hoping that if she pretended, they would “have a normal, loving relationship.” The ex-Spice Girl also said she finds it “very disturbing” that she “does not have a clear memory of some incidents because her trauma blocks the mind”.

Mel and Stephen secretly married in 2007 and separated in 2017. They have a daughter, Madison Brown Belafonte (10). Mel has two children from previous relationships: Phoenix Chi Gulzar (22) who she shares with ex-husband Jimmy Gulzar and Angel Iris Murphy Brown (14), whom she co-parents with Eddie Murphy.
