In the coming years, offshore wind energy will become the most important source of renewable energy in the Netherlands. In the future, the entire energy requirement can come from offshore wind, thanks to ever-expanding wind turbines. In this article we look at the mega turbines of the future and the wind farms they will be installed in.
The largest wind turbines currently in use have blades that are almost 100 meters long, good for a rotor diameter of 200 meters and 11MW of power. Manufacturers are already working on wind turbines with 115-meter blades, and according to research, this could rise to 145 meters by 2040. This would result in a rotor diameter of 300 meters and a capacity of 27MW.
