Meeting in Memory: Conversations and Audiovisual Recording of ‘La amante fascista’ Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Coup d’état

The projections of the play will be accompanied by conversations in which the INDH will promote dialogue around the concepts of dramaturgy, human rights and memory. All activities will be open and free, with limited spaces and admission to the events on a first-come, first-served basis.

The audiovisual record of the work was made by the director Vicente Sabatini, recognized for his work in television productions.

As part of the activities promoted by the National Institute of Human Rights under the title “Meeting in Memory”, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état and in alliance with the Teatro a Mil Foundation, a Vicente Sabatini’s audiovisual recording of the emblematic national play “La amante fascista”, which will be accompanied by talks open to the public.

This outstanding piece of Chilean theater, written by Alejandro Moreno, directed by Víctor Carrasco and starring Paulina Urrutia, addresses the moment that Iris lives, a woman who during a sleepless night awaits with anxiety and anguish for the arrival of her lover -the dictator – to the northern city where he lives, while he reviews a series of circumstances, facts and situations that with drama, sarcasm and irony account for the darkest years of the military dictatorship.

Conversations in regions

The cycle of functions of “The Fascist Lover” will also have talks open to the public in various regions of the country. The attendees will be able to reflect from the work on the importance of historical memory as a necessary element for the deepening of democracy and respect for human rights in the present and the future. The cycle includes 16 exhibitions in nine regions, and includes locations such as Alto Hospicio, Puerto Williams, Illapel and Castro, among others.

The director of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH), Consuelo Contreras Largo, highlighted the importance of this work, noting that “first, it allows us to remember the role that the performing arts had during the dictatorship. They were a channel for denouncing the abuses and violations of human rights. And, secondly, this reflection to which the work invites can allow people to become familiar with our history and with it at times, a painful process of remembering, so as not to repeat past violations”.

For her part, Carmen Romero Quero, general director of the Teatro a Mil Foundation, highlighted that “we promote this cycle in collaboration with other spaces and institutions, such as this important alliance with the INDH, to activate the memory of our recent history through the performing arts, with a selection of great national and international works, which invite us to dialogue from different perspectives, placing at the center of reflection the value – for healthy democratic coexistence – of unrestricted respect for human rights in our country and in the world” .

These activities, free and open to the public from the age of 16 -according to the age restriction of the work- will be moderated by INDH officials and in some regions they will have the participation of the director of the assembly, Víctor Carrasco, who will be part of of the panel that will share with the audience their reflections on the themes that this emblematic piece of Chilean theater addresses. All activities will be open and free, with limited spaces and admission to the events on a first-come, first-served basis.
