The Russian Daniil Medvedev, seeded No.1 and 3rd player in the world, qualified on Saturday for the final of the ATP tournament in Marseille by beating the Australian Matthew Ebden (ATP 287), forced to retire when the score was of 6-4, 3-0 in favor of the Russian.
Daniil Medvedev, finalist of the last Australian Open, is sure to dislodge Rafael Nadal from 2nd place in the new ATP ranking which will be published on Monday. It will be the first time since July 25, 2005 that the 2nd place in the world has not been occupied by a member of the “Big Four” (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray).
In the final on Sunday, Medvedev will face a Frenchman, the winner of the match between Pierre-Hugues Herbert (ATP 93) and Ugo Humbert ‘(ATP 31).
“It’s a shame for Ebden. He was living a dream week with this semi-final after coming out of qualifying. And today, until his injury, he played almost better than me, ”Medvedev said.
Ebden was injured at the very end of the first round, during which he tied with Medvedev, who will become N.2 in the ATP standings on Monday.
“After he called for physio, I saw that he couldn’t move, that he was in pain. I just had to earn points and see how it goes, ”added Medvedev.
“It’s the first time I’ve played in Marseille. I am very happy to have had two good matches before today’s one. It’s good for the tournament to have a Frenchman in the final. It will be a very interesting semi-final between them, I will watch ”, he also declared.
