Medical team that treated Maradona has to answer in lawsuit | NOW

The medical team that treated Diego Maradona has to answer to a lawsuit. A judge in Buenos Aires on Wednesday approved the request of the Argentine prosecutor’s office.

The eight suspects are charged with negligent death. Maradona died on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60 in a home north of Buenos Aires, a few weeks after undergoing brain surgery.

Among the suspects are Leopoldo Luque, Maradona’s personal physician, and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov. All suspects deny having committed intentional manslaughter, as the charges officially state. They face up to 25 years in prison.

The judge’s decision can still be appealed. As a result, the lawsuit is unlikely to start until late 2023 or early 2024. According to researchers, serious mistakes have been made in the home care of the Argentine football star. Maradona was in poor health.

The indictment refers to “an accumulation of criminally relevant behavior that led to the sad demise of Maradona”. More than 80 witnesses have already testified in the investigation and they are expected to do so again during the trial.
