MediaTek snatches Qualcomm from top 5 processor manufacturer podium, according to Counterpoint

For a long, long time, Qualcomm has held the top spot in the list of the largest manufacturers of mobile phone processors on the planet and has done so, as we have discussed on several occasions, without having its own factories. The Snapdragon have dominated the sector with an iron fist in terms of sales but it seems that has changed in the last quarter scrutinized.

According to the data provided by Counterpoint Research, renowned technology market analysts, Qualcomm has become the second largest manufacturer in the third quarter of the year, between the months of July and September. And the first place, at least in that period, has fallen on the side of MediaTek.

MediaTek, Qualcomm and the chasing trio

Although MediaTek was slowly but surely hunting it down, Qualcomm held 29% of the world market for mobile processors and was ahead of MediaTek by three percentage points. Something that has not changed on the Qualcomm side in this last quarter but on the Taiwanese side, well MediaTek has grown 5 points taking advantage of, among other things, a drop in sales of Samsung’s Exynos.

Thus, Qualcomm maintains 29% of the market but MediaTek goes from 26% to 31% and takes first place, at least temporarily, in the third quarter of this fateful (at many levels) 2020. Third place It is not too clear since what used to be three well differentiated steps is now a triple 12% for Samsung, Huawei and Apple thanks to the variations of the trio’s quota.

Samsung had 16% of the market with its Exynos just a year ago while the photography of Huawei’s Kirin has not changed since then. For its part, Apple has grown one percentage point, which serves to place itself in equal conditions with its companions of rung in the ladder of this market.

This is how the quintet remains, the Top 5 of the mobile processor market in this third quarter of 2020, always according to the data collected by Counterpoint Research. MediaTek in first place with 31%, Qualcomm in second with 29% and, behind, Samsung, Huawei and Apple with 12% per head. The rest of the processor market goes from 3% to 4% in one year, with figures from Unisoc.
