The shedding obligation is introduced to prevent companies in the Netherlands from becoming infected by the virus. Recently there was an infection at a hobby location with poultry in Bretzfeld in Germany.
“Because the recent infection in Germany is more westerly than previous infections, there is a chance that in other parts of Western Europe the virus is also present in local wild water bird populations,” writes Minister Schouten of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

In four weeks, experts who will inform the ministry about the situation will meet again to see if the threat has diminished sufficiently.
“If the situation is then normalized, for example because there have been no new outbreaks, the rearing obligation can be withdrawn,” the ministry writes.
