MDG wants to stop Vedum – offers support to pure Labor government – VG

NEW PROPOSAL: Leader of the MDGs, Une Bastholm, says the Center Party and the Green Party are Norway’s most climate-hostile parties. Now she is opening up to support a pure Labor Party government so that the SP does not gain power. Photo: Frode Hansen

MDG’s Une Bastholm will support a pure Labor government, and propose an alliance with Rødt and SV. But she gets a cold shoulder from Jonas Gahr Støre.

Leader of the Green Party, Une Bastholm, is now coming up with a new alternative to get the Labor Party to close the door for the Center Party in government.

– It is up to the Labor Party whether they choose a collaboration with the Center Party or a government constellation that will be much better for children and young people’s future and climate. We believe this is only possible if the Labor Party keeps the SP out, and rather goes for a Labor Party government with support from SV, MDG and Rødt, so we can prioritize climate, environment and children, Bastholm says to VG.

– So you want to offer your support to a pure Labor government?

– Yes, I think it is just as easy for us to get support for important environmental policy with a pure Labor government than a government with the Center Party. We have a historic boost we must make for climate, nature and animals, and I think that will be more difficult with Ola Borten Moe as Minister of Petroleum and Energy.

Last poll: Missing three seats

– How likely is this option?

– In the last national poll, three seats were missing for a majority consisting of the Labor Party, with support from MDG, Rødt and SV. I see this as completely realistic. We are dependent on getting enough impact for climate, nature and animals. This is a historically important choice for the children’s future, she says.

The survey was conducted by Norstat for Dagens Næringsliv on 30 July. Then MDG, SV and Rødt received a total of 17.6 percent support and 32 seats. In comparison, the Labor Party, the Center Party and SV received a total of 92 seats.

Cold shoulder from Labor and Red

Labor leader Jonas Gahr Støre rejects MDG’s invitation.

– The Labor Party has one alternative in this election. It is a majority government with the Labor Party, SP and SV, Støre says to VG and adds:

– If we can get support for politics from other parties then that is fine, but I think that alternative has the opportunity to get a majority and we have the opportunity to agree on the important issues, he says.

Red leader Bjørnar Moxnes also believes that the MDGs’ plan is bad.

– There are major disadvantages with both a pure Labor government and a Labor / Socialist government. The previous pure Labor government, Stoltenberg I, was the most privatizing government ever, says Moxnes and refers to, among other things, the hospital reform and the pension reform.

– And then there are major disadvantages with a Labor / Socialist government that Vedum wants, which will give power and influence to the party Conservatives, he says.

SV open to everyone

SV leader Audun Lysbakken says they are positive about cooperating with most people on the red-green side.

– We want broad red-green cooperation, and are positive to cooperation with both the Labor Party, the Socialist People’s Party, the Red Party and the MDGs. We are the unifying force on the red-green side, says Lysbakken to VG.

– Now is not the time to close doors to anyone, and we say that to both Sp and MDG. First, we must have choices. When we see what kind of majority we get, it is time to sit down and negotiate, he says.

Sp leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum is not offended.

– Bastholm must be allowed to think that. The Center Party and the MDG view very differently on several issues, for example in tax policy and how we must use natural resources to create jobs throughout Norway. If we are to have a down-to-earth and good policy, a government with the Center Party and the Labor Party is clearly the best thing, he writes in a text message to VG.
