One of the most traditional English club brands Newcastle United has new owners after fourteen years. The sale of the four-time league champion to the portfolio of a consortium led by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) was completed last Thursday after being knocked out by the Premier League management.

You received special treatment in London over the weekend. What was it about?
“I got plasma in my joint, they used a special laser to correct my scar in which I had inflammation, and I also got special injections directly into the scar. We do it so that I can function more normally, so that I am not pushed by a football boot and the like.
They warned me that it would never be the same again, but I believe that it will not limit my performance. We will see what the reaction will be after the injections, because it also depends on when exactly I will return to full-fledged training. However, I definitely want to move on, at least in working with the goalkeeping coach. ”

Newcastle United changed owners last week. The majority owner is the Public Investment Fund, whose chairman is the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Muhammad bin Salmán with assets estimated at more than 290 billion euros. How did you respond to this message?
“It’s a plus for everyone. The new owner, he said, has the ambition to lift the club and restore its previous glory. Who wouldn’t want Newcastle to fight for the top again? During the week, we should have a meeting with the new representatives of the club as a player’s cabin, where they will tell us more. I’m curious myself. The owner has huge assets and wants to invest, which is definitely good.
On the other hand, it’s not good to dwell too much on that from my position. Just because he has the money doesn’t mean he’s going to waste it now. And that everything will suddenly be different. I assume that new people have prepared an interesting project, especially in the long run. In addition, the whole process must also comply with the rules of financial fair play, so immediate and headless shopping cannot be expected.
If we take Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain, the reconstruction took a long time there as well. Of course, I believe that I will live to see it as a Newcastle player. I would like to catch those nicer times, because my career is shortening. “Every footballer, in every club, has to reckon with something like that. The Premier League is the best league in the world, with the biggest money. I have experienced competition in every workplace. Wherever I was, I had to fight for my place. Nothing changes even now that the new owners have arrived. If they decide to strengthen the goalkeeper post, I will fight for a position in the goal, but I have done so far.
But first we have to look to save ourselves this season. That is our main goal. We have to start collecting points and work on where the shoe is pushing us. It is mainly a change of chances. We get to them, but we don’t score goals. I believe that will change soon. ”
As interesting arrivals can be expected, everyone will now be able to fight even harder for their position in the squad. Can this be an immediate advantage for Newcastle in the upcoming league rounds?
“Can. On the other hand, the Premier League itself should be the greatest possible motivation for everyone to show maximum performance. However, I agree that this may be a new impetus for players whose contracts need to be terminated. It is necessary to show up as soon as possible, ideally right after the national team break at home against Tottenham. It would be great if we achieved a good result immediately and pleased not only the new owners, but also our fans. ”

How did they react to the arrival of the new owners?
“Reactions have been unreal. To be honest, I have never experienced anything like this in Newcastle. I just went to town to buy a few things and people kept stopping me. Many were already in a well-energized state, they could be seen celebrating. But no wonder, Mike Ashley, the current owner, was not very popular. There were perhaps five or six thousand people in front of the stadium, which was an absolute extreme. I can’t even imagine what it would be like if the club won the championship title or some other trophy. I believe I will experience it again… ”
The club’s minority co-owner, Amanda Staveley, has stated that the goal is to win a league trophy within ten years. What do you think?
“I hope it will be sooner, as I can’t imagine playing football as a 42-year-old. ‘Many times before I said that my ambitions are always the highest. In this case, it means playing European competitions. To do that, we will have to place high in the Premier League, or win one of the home cups.
But I don’t want to overtake. At the moment, it’s really about quickly collecting as many points as possible and correcting our taste after a bad start to the season. We realize that we also lost points in matches with playable opponents. We need to improve performance and results so that our fans can celebrate something other than selling the club. ”

But at the same time, I will have to prove and confirm it again on the field. If they still decide to bring someone else, it’s their business. And I have no choice but to fight for my place. But I’m not thinking about it now. I only need a few days and I’m going to the event. ”

“Definitely interesting, but also challenging. If I had a goalkeeper with such a big name next to me, we probably wouldn’t start at the same starting line. But I would definitely not give up. Even the goalkeepers who are now in the club have their quality. Plus, they’re English, so I have to work harder to get another chance to catch. ”
