Mayors in Gironde Propose Rally to Stop Urban Riots and Violence

July 2, 2023 at 9:37 p.m. by Élodie Quesnel

Faced with the urban riots which continue all over France, after the death of Nahel, Tuesday June 27, several mayors want to say a stop to the violence by proposing a rally this Monday July 3, at noon.

Despite a calmer night, between Saturday July 1 and Sunday July 2, tensions remain, all the same, very present in Gironde, following the death of Nahel, on June 27, in Nanterre. According to the Gironde prefecture, garbage and vehicle fires were still counted. But more seriously, public buildings or facilities were vandalized: the Nelson Mandela association house, the social center annex and the La Marègue tram stop in Cenon and the Secours Populaire annex in Saint-André-de- Cubzac. Finally, in Mérignac and Saint-Jean-d’Illac, two fire brigade barracks were targeted by mortar fire.

A rally against violence in front of town halls

Faced with these nights of riots and violence, the mayors of Gironde, as in Pessac or Talence, invite their fellow citizens to a citizen rally to call for a return to calm. Gathering on the forecourt of the Town Halls, this Monday, July 3, at noon. The municipalities of Bordeaux Métropole have not been spared the riots in recent days. Bus shelters were damaged, windows broken, several cars and businesses set on fire, overnight from Friday to Saturday. This appeal was launched by the association of Mayors of France (AMF), following the terrible night experienced by the mayor of Haÿ-les-Roses, in Val-de-Marne. His home was burned down from Saturday night to Sunday while his family was inside. Since the beginning of the riots, several elected officials have been targeted by acts of violence.
