Mayor Questions COVID Vaccine Recommendations and Costs at Prefectural College Meeting

• within the Prefectural College, which took place on February 15, the executive director of the Brăila Public Health Directorate (DSP), Dr. Gabriel Ciochină, wanted to make an intervention to announce that the delivery of the “Moderna” anti-COVID vaccine began in family doctors’ offices • present at the meeting, the mayor Marian Dragomir, although he emphasized that it was not a direct attack on Ciochina or DSP Brăila, wanted to draw attention to the fact that the discussions and recommendations for vaccination against the COVID virus should probably stop in 2024, especially in the context of the mountains of money spent at the center on millions of vaccine doses, which are currently being thrown away • he stated that there should be no further induction of COVID psychosis among population • Ciochina stated in his turn that the “Moderna” vaccine he refers to is one that targets the new strains of the virus

Chief Edilul Marian Dragomir has reached saturation on topics related to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The mayor had an intervention on this subject, on Thursday, February 19, within the Prefectural College. More precisely, at the meeting held at Brăila Prefecture, the executive director of the Brăila Public Health Directorate (DSP), Dr. Gabriel Vasile Ștefan Ciochină, wanted to have an intervention to announce the current epidemiological situation. He reminded that there is in force a state of epidemic at the national level for measles and one of alert regarding the circulation of the influenza virus. In this context, the head of the DSP Brăila also added for those interested that the delivery of a “Moderna” type anti-COVID vaccine has begun in the offices of family doctors.

“I would like to inform you in the current epidemiological context. As is known, since last year, on December 5, a state of epidemic was declared at the national level, caused by measles. And starting from February 2, the state of epidemiological alert regarding the circulation of the influenza virus is in force. In this context, taking into account the viral circulation and at the level of the Public Health Directorate, the organizational measures ordered by the Ministry of Health were taken to ensure certain quantities of vaccines. I am referring to a “Moderna” anti-COVID vaccine, which has already started to be delivered to the locations of family doctors’ offices. I wanted to make this clarification, since the supply of this type of vaccine is done only through the Public Health Directorates, unlike the flu vaccine, which can be picked up from pharmacies based on a prescription issued by the family doctor. Vaccination is free. It is optional. And we recommend during this period the vaccination mainly of those who are over 65 years old, of people who have various health problems, various comorbidities in order to be able to ensure the preventive health measure along this line as well”stated Mallet.

Dragomir: «It is necessary to stop these psychoses»

Present in the hall, the mayor Marian Dragomir wanted to have an intervention on this subject, making it clear, however, that it is in no way a political attack against Ciochina or DSP Brăila. The head mayor said that after the fiasco with national-level spending on the topic of COVID, maybe the authorities should be more reserved in 2024, in recommending people to get vaccinated or talking to them about epidemics.

“I would like it not to be understood that there is any allusion to the material presented by Mr. Ciochină Gabriel. This is not an attack on him personally and I want to mention that. But I note that after I finished with the COVID epidemic, I started with the presentation of measles epidemics and flu alerts. And now you inform us that other vaccines for COVID have arrived from “Moderna” and recommend people to get vaccinated. I don’t want to comment too much, but it seems to me that it is not appropriate to generate a new psychosis in the population. Or to find a way to justify the exorbitant costs. Because this vaccine is not free. It is paid for with our money, everyone’s. A justification is attempted. Instead of throwing billions or millions of doses in the trash, invite people once again now, in 2024, to get vaccinated against COVID. I don’t know how to tell you, but frankly, I would consider it necessary to stop these psychoses. Let’s see our lives. Of all that is beautiful. Let’s end the epidemics, and the restrictions, and other things like that. I repeat, it is not an attack on your person or institution.” said Dragomir.

For his part, Gabriel Ciochina wanted to intervene to convey that the “Moderna” vaccine he referred to is meant for the new strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and is not related to those from the pandemic period.

“Thank you, Mr. Mayor! I noted that it is not an attack. It was about health. It’s an opinion. I would just like to point out that the “Moderna” vaccine that is being brought now also takes into account the currently circulating strain. And just like the flu vaccine has strains and there are types of vaccine that are annual, so is this vaccine. It is free for those who want to get vaccinated. Regarding the other costs at the level of the Ministry of Health, I cannot comment. Probably, if certain details are desired, they can be requested from the Ministry of Healthconcluded DSP Brăila director.
