Mayor of Daugavpils: Covid-19 statistics in our city are “artificially inflated” – Society and Politics – News

Commenting on the government’s planned additional restrictions on the city, he acknowledged that the council to limit the spread of Covid-19 today supported a proposal to temporarily reduce the discount for pensioners in the city’s public transport. It is not planned to introduce other restrictions in the city yet, because the institutions work remotely and the residents are accepted only after the previous registration.

Prelatov also said that the Ministry of Health, which recommends the new restrictions, “could have helped better a couple of years ago when hospitals closed.”

The mayor has studied the disease data in the city and concluded that the statistics are “artificially inflated”.

“On the day when 50 patients were reported, in fact they were only four from Daugavpils,” Prelatov claimed.

He is convinced that the number of patients in the city includes all those residents, including those from other municipalities who are being tested for Covid-19 in a hospital, and this shows a positive result. Previously, such an opinion was also expressed by other representatives of the city coalition and city council employees, the agency LETA observed.

Currently, the distance learning process in the city is provided in 19 groups in eight pre-school educational institutions, but in the 1st-6th grade schools, 20 classes are remotely in ten schools, of which 19 classes have been designated as contact persons by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC). Due to the lack of teachers in the classroom, it is not possible to organize the learning process in person or partially remotely. In turn, 212 pupils study individually in grades 1-6, who have been determined by the SPKC as contact persons, but in pre-school – 68 children. In total, there are currently 31 pupils, 23 teachers and 13 technical staff in the city. There are four children, 22 teachers and 19 technicians in kindergartens.

Although the number of classes and schools affected by Covid-19 has increased in the city compared to the situation a week ago, the mayor believes that the council should not impose additional restrictions.

It has already been reported that in Daugavpils, in order to temporarily limit Covid-19, the discount for pensioners for driving on the city’s public transport will be temporarily reduced, the deputies of the city council decided at an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday.

MEPs decided to set the fare reduction for pensioners on public transport at 50% during the emergency, which means that the journey will cost 0.25 euros. Previously, pensioners were 100% relieved and did not have to pay for city buses and trams.

It is also reported that the government plans to decide on stricter security measures in Daugavpils, Baldone, Krāslava, Salacgrīva, Aknīste and Varakļāni districts today due to the spread of Covid-19, the director of the Public Health Department of the Ministry of Health Santa Līviņa revealed at the press conference.

It is planned that from November 26 in Daugavpils, Baldone, Krāslava, Salacgrīva, Aknīste and Varakļāni districts 5th-12th grade students will study remotely, as well as there will be no face-to-face practical training in vocational education institutions and universities, as well as adults in various courses and professional development courses. . Until now, 7th-12th grade students studied in these municipalities, as elsewhere in Latvia.

It is also envisaged that hairdressing services will not be provided in these administrative areas. Līviņa reminded that hairdressing services have so far been the only ones in the beauty industry that were still allowed, but in order to reduce the opportunities for people to contact them, it is proposed to ban them in these municipalities.

Museums and other cultural sites are also expected to be closed. Libraries will be able to issue books to take away.

It is also planned that fairs will not operate in Daugavpils, Baldone, Krāslava, Salacgrīva, Aknīste and Varakļāni counties, because, according to Līviņa, specialists also see risks in them.

There will also be no indoor indoor sports training, no private events outside the household, except for funerals and, in some cases, christening ceremonies.

It is planned to stipulate that no more than 50% of the maximum possible vehicle capacity should be provided in urban public transport, as it is difficult to maintain a distance of two meters on buses.

However, shops and other indoor and outdoor retail outlets will need to ensure that these locations do not accommodate more than 20% of the maximum number of people allowed by the site’s infrastructure.

Līviņa said that stricter restrictions are planned from Thursday to enable local governments to prepare for their implementation. They have yet to be decided by the government.
