How beautiful the Liberation Festivals had become. Celebrate 75 years of freedom, embrace freedom and appreciate freedom. But yes… What can you do on 5 May 2020, the corona version?
The National Committee 4 and 5 May and all Dutch people have to do things completely differently on Liberation Day this year. And that while the liberation of the Second World War is exactly 75 years ago. Here you can read how things can be a bit different on the day after the National Remembrance Day.
The flag out
The Dutch flag is flying festively, while of course it was still flying at half mast on 4 May. Those who do not have a flag can hang a memorial poster on the 5th of May. For those who have a printer: the poster can be found here.

Sing at 5 to 5
The National Committee 4 and 5 May and the Liberation Festivals have embraced an initiative of Claudia de Breij at 4.55 pm (5-for-5), the song Sing, fight, cry, pray, laugh, work and admire of Ramses Shaffy sound throughout the Netherlands. The committee invited all radio stations to broadcast the song at exactly that time and the people at home to let it blast through the speakers or sing along outside.
Several radio stations have decided not to participate in the Ramses Shaffy singalong. Qmusic, NPO Radio 1, 2 and 4, Sky Radio, 538 and Radio Veronica do not play the song. The channels state that the plan does not fit in the planned programming for Liberation Day. NPO 3FM, NPO Radio 5, Radio 10 and various regional channels have joined the action.

TV: Concert on the Amstel
Normally the Amstel at Royal Theater Carré in the evening of May 5 is full of boats to enjoy the Concert on the Amstel. This is not allowed due to the coronavirus, so there is now a replacement program from the foyer of the said theater. NOS 75 years of liberation, Liberation Day 2020 contains many highlights of the May 5 concerts of the past. Simone Kleinsma and Roel van Velzen, among others, will perform. The presenter is Simone Weimans and of course we conclude with Vera Lynns according to tradition We’ll Meet Again.

Freedom with Martin Garrix
DJ Martin Garrix and millennial channel Insight TV will bring a from 7 p.m. May 5 Exclusive Music Special. From 7 pm new tracks and greatest hits of the producer and DJ from Amstelveen will be heard. Garrix shares his music of freedom with the world from a yacht, the Zeelander Z55. A helicopter and drones capture the “somewhat lonely” performance on a lake. The spectacle can be found on channel 38 (KPN HD) and channel 692 (KPN UHD).
