Maurane Mazars, the 2021 Angoulême Revelation Prize

Few of the comics are so “incarnate”. In Dance ! (Le Lombard), an album particularly generous in drawings, Maurane Mazars tells the story of Uli, a young German dancer in the 1950s. His country is slowly recovering from the war but remains haunted by its disastrous ghosts. Across the Atlantic, America sparkles. His dance too, magnified by the musicals that parade on the screens. For Uli, an assertive and solar homosexual, it’s a new world. But he also discovers that behind this facade image, the old world built on segregation has not yet said its last word.

Everything is fluid in this album: the brushstrokes which twirl with ease in a joyful burst of colors and effects, finally the narration, with its beautiful sequences and subtle punctuations.

“Tanz!” by Maurane Mazars (Le Lombard)

Reflection on identity, vocation and gender, Dance ! is undoubtedly an album that deserved to be distinguished, as well as its talented author whom we met for you behind the scenes of the awards ceremony – almost clandestine this year – of the Angoulême Festival.
