Matthijs van Nieuwkerk will be staying at the BNNVARA with immediate effect. “The fact that my employer openly doubts my sincerity makes further cooperation impossible,” he wrote in a statement.
The reason is an article in the Volkskrant Friday night. It emerged that the presenter joined the TV program The world goes on guilty of transgressive behavior for years. The newspaper spoke to dozens of former employeeswho spoke of extreme outbursts of anger and public humiliation.
BNNVARA said in a press release on Friday that “in-depth conversations” had taken place with Van Nieuwkerk about his time at DWDD. The broadcaster said she was disappointed by the written statements on the matter that the presenter had prepared.

62-year-old Van Nieuwkerk interprets this as open doubt, according to his statement. “I am breaking my ties with BNNVARA,” he writes. “I’ll use the next period to come to my senses and then hope to be heard again.”
The presenter is moved in her new, short press release. “I’ve noticed that there are many emotions fighting for priority: shame at the fear that the publishers felt, regret that I had – quite literally – blind ambition and therefore crossed the lines, sadness at that DWDD, after all the work of my life, it is reeling”.
