Matej Blumel: Returning to Brno and Looking Ahead to the Season

Are you looking forward to Litvínov?

Very much. I like challenges, so I am happy that I will start in the senior extra league for the first time against a team that had a great start to the season and is very high in the table. That will make it sweeter to beat Litvínov. (smile).

How did your return from Finland to Brno come about?

At the beginning of the season, I commuted between Ilves and the partner team KooVee, which operates in the second highest competition there. I weighed all the pros and cons and decided to return to the Czech Republic. When Kometa showed interest in me, I did not deal with any other extra-league offers.

You are back in familiar surroundings…

I haven’t been here for almost five years, but nothing much has changed in the Brno hall. Everything is almost the same. I immediately thought of a lot of beautiful things that I experienced here in the youth teams. Most of all, winning silver medals in the junior extra league stuck in my memory. After a great run in the playoffs, we didn’t make it until the finals in Liberec. Back then, my teammates were, for example, Kuba Brabenec, Ivoš Sedláček or Standa Svozil.

Did you find any familiar faces in the cabin now?

I remember the team leader Mr. Železný or assistant Jiří Horáček. I know some young guys too. I quickly get to know the others. My new teammates accepted me wonderfully. I believe I won’t have a problem fitting in.

What place in the dressing room did they assign you?

I sit in the corner among other younger players.

Are you the type of hockey player who shows off a lot in the cabin?

I’ll probably be quiet at first. But in time I will definitely have something to say.

What do you expect from the engagement in Brno?

I would like to show myself in the best possible light in the Czech Republic. I want to help Kometa achieve some success with good performances. I know that I joined a strong team, which is now constantly improving after a failed entry into the extra league. I saw Sunday’s match with Karlovy Vary. The boys didn’t allow the opponent almost anything in it.

How do you intend to be useful to your new team on the ice?

For example, high commitment. I consider myself a good skater. I am unpleasant for opponents in personal fights, which I finish strongly. I don’t lack confidence on the puck. And of course I want to contribute to extra league points with goals and assists.

How do you look back on the years spent in Finland?

It was a great hockey and life school for me. I had to take care of myself, which is not easy at sixteen. Even though I moved between A and B in Ilves Tampere for the past two seasons, it was still a great experience. I rate it positively. Now, however, I sensed that I needed a change. I can see in myself how I have significantly revived by returning to Brno.

You are drafted by the Florida Panthers. Is it your dream to win an engagement overseas?

If there is a chance to claim it with my performances for Kometa, I will of course be happy. That would be absolutely great. However, I am not dealing with this now. Above all, I now want to play well in Brno.

Are you in contact with Florida officials?

Yes, we are in touch quite often. Even the representatives of the American club are pleased that I will play in an elite competition in the Czech Republic.

Less than a year ago, you were a member of the Czech national team that advanced to the finals at the U20 World Championship in Canada, and eventually took second place. How do you remember it?

It was a great show. We had a super team. Winning the silver medal is my biggest hockey achievement to date. Another championship is coming up and I will be rooting for our followers to do something similar. If all the guys from overseas come to Sweden, we should have a very good team again.
