Massive power breakdown hits Pakistan

LAHORE: Power supply disrupted across Pakistan. According to the Ministry of Energy, power supply has been disrupted across the country due to the reduction in the frequency of the National Grid.

Following the financial crisis, the power generation units were temporarily shut down during the winter night as a measure to save fuel costs. This is what led to the grid collapse, Pakistani media reported, quoting Energy Minister Khurum Dastagir.

As the units were switched on one by one on Monday morning, frequency deviations were reported in many parts of the country. Officials also explain that there was a fluctuation in the voltage and due to this the units were shut down.

The minister claimed that Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) have already restored some of their grids. He also stated that there are some complicated issues in Karachi.

This is the second such widespread power outage in Pakistan in three months.
