After sweeping over the state of Baja California in northwestern Mexico, tropical storm “Hilary” hit land in the southwestern United States late Sunday evening Norwegian time.

Massive rainfall and potentially “catastrophic” floods have been forecast, and during the night to Monday several areas have already felt the consequences.

Evacuations have been initiated in both Mexico and California. Videos on social media show flooded streets in both Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Nevada. In Los Angeles, efforts are being made to provide shelter to the homeless. It has been issued tornadovarsel i San Diego, where the national weather services also warn of pea-sized hail. All public schools in Los Angeles and San Diego are closed on Monday, and employees who have the opportunity are asked to work from home. By 01:00 on the night of Monday Norwegian time, around 1,000 flights had been cancelled, both domestically and abroad. Over 4,000 flight departures have also been delayed during Sunday, writes CNN. As the storm “Hilary” hit the USA, California was also hit by an earthquake. The earthquake had a strength of 51, and could be felt in both Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Ventura, writes NBC News. Several aftershocks have also been reported, but no injuries.

The storm is the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years.

It was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm before it hit the United States, but it is still expected to cause major destruction.

– Has taken the most lives

Michael Brennan, who heads the US National Hurricane Center, says according to the news agency AP that it is the amounts of water, and not the wind, that will be most dangerous this time. In some places, as much rain can fall in a few hours as it usually does in a whole year, he says.

– You don’t want to drive around outside trying to cross flooded roads, either on foot or by car. Flooding from rainfall has taken the most lives in tropical storms and hurricanes in the US in the last ten years, he says.

A state of emergency has been declared in both Nevada and California.

– People have to take the storm seriously, they have to listen to their local government officials and they have to be sure that they are not putting themselves in danger, says Deanne Criswell of the emergency authorities FEMA to CNN.

Hit land in Mexico on Sunday

At 20:00 on Sunday evening Norwegian time, “Hilary” reached land in Mexico with torrential rain and strong winds in a sparsely populated area south of the city of Ensenada.

In the Mexican city of Santa Rosita, one person drowned when a car was swept away in a flood-sized stream. However, the rescue workers managed to save four others, writes NTB.

Life-threatening waves have been reported along the entire coast of Baja California, and many people have sought shelter in shelters in Cabo San Lucas at the tip of the long Mexican peninsula.

The island of Hawaii in the USA was also recently hit by extreme weather. At least 114 people lost their lives in the wildfires on the island of Maui:
